Description
Curated by the MAR Education Advocacy Team, these grade-grouped sets of identity-affirming children’s books with a trauma-informed guide, lesson plan, and Crayola supplies have everything you need to spark brave, everyday conversations about belonging. Each basket is designed around the “windows and mirrors” approach: mirrors that reflect a child’s own identity with dignity and joy, and windows that offer respectful views into the lives of others so every reader feels seen and learns to view each other with care.
Why this matters: representation changes what children believe is possible and how they treat one another. When stories centered on diverse voices meet simple, ready-to-use supports, educators and caregivers can lead thoughtful discussions without guesswork, weaving language for empathy, fairness, and repair into daily routines. Over time, these read-alouds become habits: kids practice naming feelings, noticing bias, and standing beside their peers; classrooms and homes practice belonging; schools and communities begin to choose, teach, and fund with equity at the center.
How it works in practice: pick a book from your bundle, download a learning resource and use the guide’s prompts and extensions, invite reflection through art, and return to the stories often. Small, consistent moments – even just ten minutes after lunch, a bedtime read, a weekly circle – add up. With the right books and tools, courage becomes practical, and culture begins to shift.
