About the Event
Welcome to MAR Talks: Parenting Beyond Power: Using Connection and Collaboration to Transfrom Your Family- and the World.
Join us for a conversation with Jen Lumanlan and Lucinda Woodward as we explore what it means to parent beyond power. Have you ever felt like you want to parent in a connected and concious way- but the demands of every day life make it difficult ( and sometimes impossible) to reach your parenting values? You aren't alone. That's why we will explore how our current society impedes the way we WANT to connect with our kids, and ways we can learn to lean more into gentleness, connection and collabortion.
"It might seem like the social challenges we're facing are completely disconnected from our daily experience of parenting... but in fact they are intimately connected. Just as your own interactions with your parents shaped who you are, your interactions with your children shape how they will be in relationships with you - and with others in the world. When we use power to get our children to comply, they then use power over others in the wider world. Sharing power with our children doesn't mean we're in a free-for-all: instead it means we're in a relationship with them where their needs and our needs are met on a regular basis... and that makes parenting easier. (It might also change the world.)" - From Your Parenting Mojo

Meet Jen: Jen Lumanlan M.S., M.Ed. hosts the Your Parenting Mojo Podcast, which has been downloaded 3.5+ million times and was named Best Research-Based Parenting Podcast by Lifehacker. The show began by sharing scientific research that parents can use to make decisions about raising their children now also has an explicitly anti-racist, patriarchy-healing, post-capitalist worldview.Jen's goal is to create a world where everyone thrives as their whole self, a vision she describes in her book Parenting Beyond Power: How to Use Connection and Collaboration to Transform Your Family - and the World. The book also contains concrete strategies parents can use to understand their children's difficult behavior, and makes parenting easier by meeting both parent's and child's needs!
Meet Lucinda:
Lucinda Woodward (they/them) found the Your Parenting Mojo Podcast while looking for resources about how to implement RIE practices. Lucinda's twins were 2.5 years old at the time, and their family had just moved to a new country. They had no local support and were feeling overwhelmed and alone. Lucinda joined the Parenting Membership at its inception more than 5 years ago and then joined the Learning Membership shortly thereafter. While Lucinda started this journey trying to be a better parent, they have found that healing themself, being in a connected relationship with their spouse, investing in their local community, and sharing power with their children have all had profound impacts on the world around them. What brought them to the podcast is not what has kept them showing up and investing in this work all these years later.
